PSA vs BGS vs SGC: Which Grading Company Gets You More Money?

The grading company on your card's label has a real impact on resale value. Here's the breakdown.

Does the Grading Company Matter?

Short answer: yes. The label on your card affects what buyers will pay — sometimes significantly.

Here's how the three major grading companies stack up in 2026:

PSA (Professional Sports Authenticator)

Best for: Mainstream sports cards, vintage cards, anything you want to sell quickly

PSA is the gold standard for resale value. A PSA 10 commands a significant premium over the same card in a BGS or SGC slab in most categories. The brand recognition is unmatched — casual buyers and serious collectors both trust it.

Downsides: Slower turnaround, higher cost at premium tiers, and grades can feel inconsistent.

BGS (Beckett Grading Services)

Best for: Modern cards, premium presentation, half-grade precision

BGS uses a subgrade system (centering, corners, edges, surface) that gives a more detailed picture of a card's condition. A BGS 9.5 "Gem Mint" with four 10 subgrades (called a "Black Label") is the holy grail — and commands massive premiums on the right cards.

For modern cards especially, BGS 9.5 is often comparable or better than PSA 10 in value.

Downsides: BGS 10s are extremely rare and hard to achieve. The slabs are bulkier.

SGC (Sportscard Guaranty)

Best for: Vintage cards (pre-1980), T206 tobacco cards, early 20th century cardboard

SGC has built a reputation as the go-to for vintage. Collectors who specialize in pre-war and vintage cards often prefer SGC holders and trust their grading for older stock.

For modern cards, SGC typically trades at a discount to PSA and BGS, but they've been closing the gap with faster turnaround times and competitive pricing.
